Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia with a population of 114,616 in 2001. It is the largest city and the economic and cultural centre of the eastern Croatian region of Slavonia, as well as the administrative centre of Osijek-Baranja county. Osijek is located on the right bank of the river Drava, 25 kilometres upstream of its confluence with the Danube.
It boasts many historic buildings as well as sacred objects, which have survived until today to tell us the secrets of the past. Among the most significant landmarks, the Fort (Tvrđa) is the most important one, which is consisted of the complex of historical buildings in the baroque style of the 18th century, as well as a number of parks that are protected as horticultural monuments. A special atmosphere is by the river Drava, where is the port with boats and several restaurants where you can relax and refresh yourself during a walk by the famous Osijek's promenade.
In Osijek throughout the year various events are held that are relevant to the tradition, costumes and folklore, and the sounds of "tambura" (an instrument specific for this region), where you can sample some traditional local delicacies from Slavonia.
